Outside of formal work, I’ve been involved in two voluntary projects to use sport to bring people together and share important stories.

BothDSCF0549 projects involved a bit of blue sky thinking, which is an excuse to use this nice picture I took at Lindisfarne, Northumberland.

  • Millennium Stars
    • Millennium Stars FC  is a football team formed in 1997 by a group of Liberian teenagers.
    • In 1999, they toured the UK, played seven matches and won them all. They’re still coaching younger kids and playing football themselves.
    • Find them here on Facebook.
  • Consett the World
    • Consett the World was a community project to bring the wider world to our town – the former steel town of Consett, County Durham – through music and sport. It ran from 2006 to 2009.

I’m also working on writing the story of Millennium Stars FC, and some other writing projects, which include:

  • Writing the memoirs of an Indian civil servant
  • Saints Alive – a book about modern heroes and heroines
  • A book about how to analyse a football match, from the point of view of a spectator (or pundit)
  • And some fiction, probably in the fantasy genre

I wrote a story for this book that’s been published to support the work of neurological and geriatric units in the North East of England – Mezzanine and Other Storeys

And here’s a short story (very short) you can download: The_Saint_of_Fuencarrasco
