Consett AFC Belles ladies football team is starting the new season wearing shirts sponsored by the town’s music festival.
The Belles were promoted to the First Division of Durham County Women’s League after winning a league and cup double last year. They wore new kit featuring the Consett Festival name and logo for their first home game of the new season against Durham Women on Sunday, September 8.
Consett Belles Team manager Paul Henry said: “It’s a fantastic link between football and the festival – we’re both up-and-coming initiatives, so it’s good promotion for us and for them.”
Consett Festival organiser Brad Wilkinson Brad said: “We’re delighted to be able to support the Consett Belles this year. It’s a pleasure to do something positive for our community. Both the festival and the team have come a long way in a short time, so it’s good to help them establish themselves at a higher grade, just as we are hoping to build on our previous success.”
Unfortunately, the game at Consett AFC’s Belle View Stadium in Delves Lane ended 8-0 to Durham, but the Belles are determined to build on last season’s triumphs to establish themselves at this level.
Paul Henry said: “It’s a big step up. Durham Ladies’ senior team is in the second division of the Women’s Super League, that’s the same division as Sunderland and Aston Villa. But this team has been together since they were under-8s and they’re the only ones in the Consett umbrella to do that.”

The link between Consett Festival and Consett football does not end with the sponsorship of the Belles’ new strip. Consett Rugby Club – the venue for the Festival for the first two years – is unavailable to host the festival in 2015 while a new pitch is being laid. So next year’s three-day music festival will be taking place at the recently built football stadium in Delves Lane during the second May Bank Holiday.
One of aims of the Festival is to support other community initiatives in the town.
Brad explained that one of aims of the Festival is to support other community initiatives in the town through any profits the festival makes. Last year, they sponsored one of the Consett under-12s football teams and raised money for a local special needs charity. Next year, proceeds from the third day of the festival will be shared between two charities and again one of them will be a Consett-based project.
